TAL’Aide: An Innovative Legal Tool to Support Tenants in the Midst of the Housing Crisis
The housing crisis is also a crisis of access to justice. Juripop has found that all too often, tenants who turn to the TAL have not had access to legal support to prepare themselves, and therefore find themselves at a disadvantage when trying to assert their rights.
That is why, in the midst of the housing crisis, Juripop has set up a free legal consultation service to help tenants awaiting a hearing at the Tribunal administratif du logement. Because the right to housing is fundamental.
NEARLY 200 PEOPLE SUPPORTED
Over a one-year period, almost 200 citizens received legal advice and support in preparation for a hearing before the Tribunal administratif du logement (TAL). These citizens benefited from free legal advice to, among other things, contest an increase in their rent, request repairs to their home or claim money owed to them.
JURIPOP CONTINUES TO SUPPORT TENANTS
The TAL’aide project, financed by the Fond Accès Justice of the Quebec Ministry of Justice, has unfortunately not been renewed for a second year. However, the strong demand for TAL’Aide highlighted by this review underlines the crucial importance of democratizing justice, particularly with the escalating cost of living and the housing crisis. People eligible for our affordable legal services can get low-cost support for their housing-related legal cases. Contact us for more information.
